Someone’s Going to Pilsen to Drink Pilsner

That’s right, we have the winner of our Czech It Out competition. He is Ross McCann and his local is Birdcage, our pub on Columbia Road E2 (yes, on the flower market).

Thanks to Pilsner Urquell, brewers of the original lager since 1842, he and a buddy are heading off to Pilsen (now known as Plzen but harder to pronounce) to explore – among other things – the extraordinary and ancient labyrinthine cellars which lie beneath the modern brewery. Draft House Chancery in Demolition Phase

Before you create, they say you must destroy. And we’re tearing the sh*t out of the old Grappollo Restaurant on Fetter Lane to reforge it as Draft House *Chancery*.

One wit on Twitter accurately described the look below as “Provincial Ramada Inn” when I posted it. Well, that suspended halogen-infested ceiling is now just so much rubble – as per the shot at the top of this piece.

We’re opening late-April – and it will be the biggest and best Draft House yet, just a 3-min walk from Chancery Lane tube – hence its name.

We Haven’t Had That Spirit Here Since 1969

I am just back from the Swiss Alps where it rained, snowed then cleared up on the last day. We lunched at a truly bizarre and wonderful hotel – the Weisshorn – a large Victorian affair (above) only accessible by walkers and cross-country skiers. The interior – last touched up in 1969 – is a fabulously eccentric time capsule.

A fumoir is an excellent idea.

Wings Wednesday!

We launched a new menu last week and some of you were appalled to find that Wings had gone Walkies.

Well, they’re back in a big(ger) way. A Pound of Buffalo Wings £9.90 A boat-load of wings, southern-fried and slathered in Frank’s Red Hot Sauce with Blue Cheese Dip and Celery Sticks Buffalo Wing Poutine £8.90 Our famous poutine (Quebecois fries with gravy and cheese curds) topped with Buffalo Wings
